Establishing a Legal Project Management Office (LPMO) – Coordinating Efforts between Legal and IT

Eleventh Hour directs and manages various process-improvement and technology-related activities for the Legal Business Unit under the supervision of the Business Unit CIO  or General Counsel, focusing on support for Corporate Compliance and Office of General Council.

Responsible for constructing or carrying out business plans and directing the flow of work of legal and technology resources assigned to work on business unit related legal IT projects. Oversight for day-to-day legal technology operations, freeing the Legal Business Unit CIO to concentrate on overall strategy and business unit relationships. Collaborates with application development, architecture & engineering and service delivery resource pool managers to identify and assign matrixed resources when needed to support both new and ongoing legal technology or process improvement work.  Works with legal teams and counsel to develop and document workflow procedures, and map information systems and repositories to improve usage or disposition.

  • Strategizes with client community to create appropriate forward thinking technology plans and drives associated implementations.
  • Oversees these program level plans to ensure appropriate staffing levels and avoids constraints in both CI and business unit resources.
  • Day to day oversight of legal technology projects assigned; gains understanding of the businesses through immersion and understanding of the business unit’s goals and objectives.
  • Matrixed operational management of resources dedicated to BU projects for the duration of those projects.
  • Conduit between Legal, IT SME’s including Architecture & Engineering and Service Delivery and the business unit in terms of staffing and matrixed management.
  • Ensure technology delivery and performance outcomes are realized in an efficient, high quality and cost effective manner.

Legal Project Manager Role

The Legal Project Manager (is more than just an Analyst role), she has accountability for architecting and implementing solutions that improve business process efficiencies and effectiveness. The Legal Project Manager has the domain expertise to advise the business on process and systems improvements. Solutions could include business process improvement, systems development, organizational change or policy development. The LPM typically reports to the CIO or IT team leader, and is closely aligned with the Legal department and its members, collaborating closely with both groups to successfully deliver results. The LPM is responsible for supporting, enhancing and the overall subject matter expert for projects assigned related to Legal systems for the organization. This role is the liaison between IT and rest of the Legal organization, with the ability to present technical information to a non-technical audience, and an ability to understand and interpret business requirements, and offer solutions that drive results:

  • Lead efforts to reengineer business process to optimize processes as it relates to the Legal department
  • Lead, identify, design and implement enabling information systems with a strong bias to configuration of commercially available off the shelf systems
  • Empower users and super-users (by training and performing knowledge transfer) to leverage Legal systems and other IT systems for business process automation and optimization
  • Lead and manage small to medium sized projects / enhancements pertaining to Legal and Legal related systems
  • Serve as liaison between business process owners in Business Units, Functional Groups, Regions and IT
  • Work with stakeholders in developing ROI based business cases for enhancements and small projects
  • Be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Legal business processes in the area of Legal systems
